I need advice about painting a room.?

I am building an addition to my home. I would like some advice on whether I should texture the walls & ceiling or leave them smooth. I want a modern updated look. Not the old fashioned popcorn textured look. Please give me some advice on this. I am worried that if I leave the walls and ceiling smooth, then it might show painting imperfections. Thanks

well first clean the room really good. vacuum a lot too. no painting job is good with dust.
you are confused, its ok. I think you should go look at some new model homes in your area. Or open houses for sell and see if you see anything you like. then find out what they did. It is difficult to visualize texture in your room. so go look at what others have done.
A smooth wall is my preference and a new smooth wall won’t show the pain imperfections. It will show the drywall finish imperfections. Make it clear to the contractor that you want a "level 5 finish" on the walls. That’s the smoothest finish you can get by a competent drywall finisher. Use flat paints when you paint. Semi-gloss or gloss paint will make your roll and brush marks more apparent. I hope that helps.

Obviously it depends upon location — and your personal preference — textured ceilings are the norm in some areas of the country.. but I do not like them..
BTW a flat white ceiling should not show a lot of paint imperfections.. you need to prime all drywall first and get a flat ceiling paint..
However, The real issue is how good a drywall-er mudder are you? if you can mud and tape the joints flat and level.. and the walls are done right you should not see a lot of imperfections.
One issue is lighting.. an open light close to the ceiling will spotlight imperfections in the celing with shadows running across the ceiling.. However, such things as recessed lights embedded in the ceiling will not highlight ceiling imperfections and tend to hid them actually..
As to textured walls.. I have not seen many that look good although faux painting techniques will hide a lot of imperfections.
