Is my dad going to die within the next year? Doesn't take care of diabetes,NEED OPINIONS!……?
My dad is almost 50 and 7 years ago he had a triple bypass for blocked arteries cause he didn’t take care of his diabetes. Over the past year things have gotten even worse. He eats candy, donuts, pizza, a TON of food no matter what we’re eating like 3 plates full (except if it’s healthy of course), drinks at least 3 cans of soda everyday. it’s diet but still bad! lots of popcorn and sugar free ice cream. HOW IS HE NOT DEAD ALREADY???!!!!! I don’t understand how someone with diabetes as bad as him is not dead. He has no exercise at all because he’s unemployed and just lays on the sofa watching tv all day or at his desk on the computer. He does take insulin twice a day. He is blind in one eye and small partial in the other and has sleep apnea but doesn’t use the stupid machine we bought for him.
Example of what he has eaten in the past 24 hours: He bought one of those huge tubs of licorice and ate about 15 of them, bought himself mini donuts and ate about 15 of those, had popcorn with extra salt, fried egg with a lot of salt and 2 pieces of toast with butter, 3 ribs and some Parmesan pasta, a big bowl of Lucky Charms, and an hour ago he bought f.ing Dominos pizza and wings!!!!! there’s more he ate, I just wasn’t around because I don’t like to be around him. It pisses me off what he does and the food he eats absolutely DISGUSTS me. I’m more of the healthy one in the family. But yeah he’s probably going to die soon isn’t he…..?

Write your dad a nice letter about how much you love him, and how it would mean so much to you if he would try to lower his blood sugars, so that he could be around longer for you.
Other than that, I don’t see much that you can do. Adults have to take responsibility for their own life. Nothing you can say will change that, especially not nagging, and especially not from a non-diabetic..
I have no way to know if/when he’s going to die. You could die first, just by walking across the street and getting hit by a bus or a drunk driver.
And, you can’t take away everything good with any flavor. There’s really nothing wrong with popcorn or diet soda for a diabetic. Even the added salt on the popcorn is no big deal. The majority of sodium does not come from table salt. It comes from processed food like the Domino’s pizza. Your father sounds depressed and bored, and that’s probably leading him to eat. It can be difficult to get a job when you’re 50 – not an excuse for him sitting on the couch, but that may be why he’s depressed.
He’s probably headed for more serious complications if he continues to make the same choices.
There is no way to state with any certainty whether your father will die in the next year or not although his future does not appear to be very promising. I appreciate both your concern and your frustration. An adult has an absolute right to poor medical care as unfortunately it is their decision and as long as they are willing to ‘live’ with the consequences there is nothing that you are able to do. Although there is no way to say for certain how long he will live – from a purely statistical perspective – he may further ‘disease’ but he is not likely to die within the next year. A serious, near fatal, or fatal cardiovascular problem within the next 10 years would be a reasonable expectation. Please let him know not only your concern but also your love. Pray. I wish both of you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.
Do not be so hard on him. Show him love and let him know that you want him around to see you get married or your kids get married and grow up. Do not be disgusted with him. He loves you. Try to google SPIRIT HAPPY DIET it helped my friend reverse type 2 diabetes without medications. Take care
